Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu has made it to the Mexican Open semifinals.
The 18 year old from Mississauga, Ont., defeated China’s Saisai Zheng Thursday in straight sets, 7-6 (3), 6-1, to advance onto the tournament’s final four.
Andreescu, currently ranked No. 71, has been on a steady path towards the top, and as recently as December 2018 was ranked No. 152.
She recently snatched the title of Canada’s top tennis player away from Eugenie Bouchard, and notably beat Venus Williams at the Auckland Open in January 2019.
Two weeks ago, she won the Oracle Challenger in California, her first career Women’s Tennis Association title.
In the semifinal, Andreescu will matchup against the United State’s Sofia Kenin, who is fifth seeded.
Kenin beat Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 to move on to the next round.
The semifinal match will start at 9 p.m. ET Friday.
