Health Canada seizes fake Viagra from Ontario store

Those who tried to buy Viagra from a store in Scarborough, Ont. were likely disappointed.

Health Canada said its inspectors recently seized counterfeit Viagra from the Adult Store. The agency confirmed with the drug’s manufacturer —Pfizer — that the seized product was counterfeit, and had not been tested for safety, effectiveness or quality.

The counterfeit drug’s packaging said it contained a prescription medication called sildenafil, which Health Canada said can pose serious health risks for people with heart problems, especially when it has not been prescribed by a doctor.

“Health Canada reminds Canadians that the best way to make sure their prescription drug is legitimate is to buy it from a licensed pharmacy,” the agency said in a press release. “Moreover, prescription drugs should be taken only under the advice and supervision of a healthcare professional because they are used to treat specific health conditions and may cause serious side effects.”

It wasn’t the first time the store has provoked attention from Health Canada’s inspectors. In May, inspectors seized 14 different types of unauthorized health products from the store, most of which were for sexual enhancement.
