Ontario man mistakenly receives $13,000 from his bank

A Hamilton, Ont., man thought he benefitted from an anonymous act of kindness last month after a large amount of money landed in his bank account.

According to the Hamilton Spectator, Dave Scott saw that $13,103.15 had been deposited on the morning of April 30.

After the discovery, Scott said he wrote his friends to ask if they were responsible for the very large donation. When he found out they weren’t, he considered all other possibilities and then called his bank.

Staff told him the money was deposited into his account at a branch nearby, but could not tell him who put it into his account.

“It was one of those days where you just can’t believe what happened,” he said. “It was like finding a bag of money — except only in this case it was through the bank.”

Days later after still having no answers, he phoned the branch where the money was deposited.

“I told my story and they said they would call me back. Within the hour, they told me the deposit was made by a lawyer’s office and that they were calling them,” he said.

Half an hour later, the bank informed him that the money was supposed to have been sent to another account. The next time Scott looked at his account, the amount was gone.

And even though the story didn’t have the ending he hoped for, he said it was a welcomed burst of excitement amid the boredom he’s been facing in quarantine.
